For a dedicated scholar of sealing techniques, Taka’s handwriting is atrocious, the care he put into crafting fuinjutsu lost in translation to the hurried scribble of kanji on pale green paper, as if the speed with which he can tie his wish to the bamboo will make it come true faster:
For the boys, for Sachi, for my team: protect them from needless suffering, and allow them to live long and joyous lives.
But a few sleepless nights later would see a series of tanabata all tied up alongside each other in neat little rows, fastidious handwriting, each one the line of a poem bleeding into the next.

purple-orange dusk sinking into long black night
and dawning into mourning
kitchen-table-clean, dust
on the counter, chairs
tucked in, kettle
dry
how long? before you dumped
the water before you shoved
the chairs in before you scrubbed
the table clean, before you erased
yourself from me
gold on the table morning waxing
to a glaring afternoon sun
gold lost to the sand with the hand that would have
taken yours in mine
sleep, i’ll wake to mourning,
until gold wanes to dim-lit dusk
and the long black night never ends
